DAILY TELEGRAPH NORTHERN LEAGUE

 

Third League Match - 3rd July 2010 

                                                           
Yorkshire go top of the Northern Counties 'Daily Telegraph' League with a 10-8 win over Cheshire at the Royal Liverpool Club.  On a testing links course Yorkshire had to work hard after losing the fouromes 3 1/2 - 2 1/2.  It was only with a strong middle order singles come back 7 1/2 - 4 1/2 which helped them take the match.

Lancashire who were looking to take top spot in the league had a narrow defeat at the hands of Northumberland at the Northumberland Golf Club 9 1/2 - 8 1/2.  Lancashire had a commanding lead at the end of the foursomes
4 1/2 - 1 1/2 but lost their way in the singles when they only had three wins and two halves.

Durham had their second win in the League by beating Cumbria at the Bishop Auckland Club by 11 - 7.   This means Cumbria last years winners of the League are still without a win.







    Second League Match – 29 May 2010

 

 

Cheshire top the table after beating Northumberland 11 – 7 at the Blyth Golf Club.   Cheshire went 4 – 2 up after the foursomes in the morning and won the singles 7 – 5.

 

Lancashire took on Durham at the Heysham Golf Club and after the morning foursomes led by 4 – 2.  In the singles Lancashire put on a strong show winning ten of the twelve singles matches.  The final score was 14 ½  - 3 ½.

 

Cumbria entertained Yorkshire at the Penrith Golf Club with the visitors winning the morning foursomes 4 – 2.  The singles was close for most of the afternoon but in the end Yorkshire won the singles 7 – 5. The final score being 11 – 7 to Yorkshire


 

First League Match – 8 May 2010

 

 

Last years reigning champions Cumbria were beaten 10 ½ - 7 ½ by Cheshire at Stockport.   After the foursomes Cheshire led by 4-2 and then went on to win the singles 6 ½ - 5 ½ .

 

Durham entertained Northumberland at Ryton where the home county got off to a flying start by winning the foursomes 4 ½ - 1 ½ .   Northumberland came back strongly winning the singles 6 ½ - 5 ½.  Final score 10 – 8.

 

Yorkshire hosted Lancashire at Huddersfield, the home of Yorkshire Golf.   After the foursomes Lancashire looked comfortable with a 4 – 2 lead.  The singles turned out to be a nail biting contest with the match between Chris Halley (Yorkshire) and Michael Hearn (Lancashire), being the last match out on the course  and Yorkshire needing to hold on to their 1 hole advantage.
