E.G.U. MEN'S QUALIFYING CHAMPIONSHIP

WEDNESDAY  9 JUNE  2010  at the WALLASEY GOLF CLUB

The Wallasey Golf Club was the venue for this years Northern Counties  Men's Qualfiying Championship.   The course was in beautiful condition and was a credit to the staff at the club.

The weather was overcast with a slight breeze when the Championship started and all was set for a keenly fought contest and the feeling in the Clubhouse was that this would be a very close run Championship.  How wrong they were.

Lancashire set the standard no one else could keep up with and were 20 under par after the first round.  No other county was under par after 18 holes.    Isle of Man and Cheshire were the nearest on two over par and Yorkshire one stroke further back.

In the afternoon the wind got up and showed what links golf is really about.  Lancashire maintained their lead and were never going to be caught.   The highlight of the second round was a course record 66 from  the young Yorkshireman Dan Wasteney.  Lancashire's Mark Young had the best 36 hole score of the day with a 69 - 67 -136 and Tommy Fleetwood had the best first round score of 67.

Lancashire were one stroke away from equaling the Championship's record score of 841 set back in 2003, but none the less this was a tremendous score.   Lancashire on 842 were 30 strokes better than Yorkshire and 32 strokes better than Northumberland.
