In the morning round, Yorkshire started very well and posted a six man score of 441, with Cheshire just six shots behind on 447, followed by Durham on 450, Lancashire on 452, Northumberland on 454, Cumbria on 462 and The Isle of Man on 465.

Chris Handy from Durham lead the way in individual performances with an exceptional six under par total of 66 over the 6,548 yard long Delamere Forest championship course. As a measure of just how good this performance was, the next best scores were a full five shots behind Chris on 71 and were posted by David Hague and Ben Brewster (both Yorkshire), Jack Clarkson (Lancashire), Rhys Thompson (Durham) and Tom Gandy (Isle of Man).

In the afternoon round low scoring became more difficult as an unseasonal high wind tested the competitors, particularly on exposed parts of the golf course such as holes 16th and 17.

Yorkshire expected a second round charge from the other county teams and had to make sure that course management errors were kept to a minimum and consistency was the order of the day.

They did this in text book fashion with a round two score of 445 for an overall aggregate total of 886, ten shots in front of their nearest challengers Lancashire whose afternoon score of 441 was an excellent effort. Northumberland finished third on 902, the same score recorded by near neighbours Durham, with Cheshire on 905, Cumbria 907 and The Isle of Man 930.

Bailey Gill with a score of 71 plus David Hague and Kealan Lowe who both recorded rounds of 72 were the pick of the Yorkshire team performances.

Rhys Thompson from Durham continued to play excellent golf in round two and posted a three under par score of 69 to put with his morning 71 for a total of 140, the best of the day from the field of 42 competitors.

Fellow Durham team mate Chris Handy finished on thee under par 141, with Cheshire’s Joshua McMahon on 142 after a great round two score of 69 that was matched by Will Bowe from Cumbria ; exceptional golf in the testing afternoon conditions. Luke Kelly from Lancashire also had reason to be pleased as he returned a one under par round of 71 in round two.

Yorkshire - Men’s County Qualifying Championship winners 2016

So Yorkshire win the NCGU Men’s County Qualifying Championship for 2016 and now go on to do battle with the other county qualifiers at Sandwell Park Golf Club, on the edge of Sandwell Valley which is an area of green belt in the heart of the West Midlands and just 500 metres away from West Bromwich Albion Football Club.

We wish Yorkshire all the very best as they try and bring the county title back to the North of England and repeat the excellent winning performance of Lancashire at Wychwood Park Golf Club in 2015.
