After both the Yorkshire Boys and Men’s teams had qualified for their respective England County Finals this season, it was up to their senior colleagues to continue this great run of success and this is exactly what they did in round one, compiling a very impressive team score of 353. Consistency was the key to Yorkshire’s performance with rounds of 70 from Ian Clarke and Andy Whitworth, plus 71s from Mark Lawson, Peter Ward and Garry Cuthbert.
Just three shots behind at lunch was Lancashire with a team score of 356. Their star performer was Tony Holt whose two over par 69 was the best first round score from any of the forty two competitors who teed it up in the morning.
Handily placed in third spot was Cumbria on 360, with Cheshire slightly off the pace on 367, followed by Northumberland on 374, Durham on 377 and the Isle of Man looking to improve in the afternoon following a morning score of 392.

The second round saw Lancashire in the ascendency as they came in with an excellent total of 357 for an aggregate score of 713. A “best of the day” round of 68 from Trevor Foster set Lancashire on the right track as did team mate Ian Crowther’s 69. Andy Westwell (72), Tony Holt (73) and Stephen Matthews (75) were the other valuable contributors to Lancashire’s afternoon success.
Yorkshire’s attempt to achieve a hat trick of wins for their county in the 2016 NCGU Qualifiers seemed to put added pressure on their performance in the afternoon as they were not quite up to the challenge on this occasion. With their form fading, Yorkshire recorded a second round of 370 for an aggregate score of 723, ten shots behind the victorious Lancashire side.
Cumbria’s total of 730 was a valiant effort which put them in third place, followed by Cheshire on 746, Northumberland and Durham on 753 and finally the Isle of Man back on 784.
|Tony Holt - best first round score 69||Dave Nelson - best second round score 69|
Individual outstanding performances on the day were achieved by Trevor Foster from Lancashire who took the best 36 hole score prize with an excellent total of 138. Team mate Tony Holt was the best first round score winner with a 69, the same number turned in by Dave Nelson from Cheshire who won the best second round prize.
So Lancashire win the NCGU Seniors’ County Qualifying Championship for 2016 and now go on to do battle with the other county qualifiers at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club early next month.
We wish Lancashire all the very best as they try and bring the county title back to the North of England by repeating their terrific winning performance from 2014 at Hindhead Golf Club in Surrey.
